A wicked person appreciates another wicked person. An ignoramus heartily appreciates a great miser. A swine can appreciate only mud. It cannot appreciate rose water or scent.

ybREMs:
The figure of speech used here is called 'ardhAntar nyAsamu'. We do not, as far as I know, have this figure of speech in English language. Readers may, please, correct me.

There are two ways in which ardhAntara nyAsam can work.
1. The writer makes a general statement and then bolsters it with a specific example. The general statement here is the nature of a fool. The supporting example is the swine which relishes mud and which cannot enjoy rosewater.

2. The writer gives an example first. Then, he deduces a conclusion from the example.

ENGLISH GIST
A woman who undergoes hardships when her husband was alive, may lead a happy life under the protection of her sons.

Whatever be the status of a person, he-she may undergo abundance and deprivation, prosperity and poverty. (kalimi=plenty. lEmi= prosperity).

ybREMS:
Here, the poet has given the example first. Then, he makes a deduction that wealth and penury are inevitable for everybody. This is also ardhAntara nyAsam, figure of speech.

Importance of food as charity

ENGLISH GIST
When a person gives away many charities, without giving free food to the hungry, nobody is going to count. Food, in comparison, is the pre-requisite for survival. (It must rank first.)

ybREMs:
*Bill Gates must read this. He was campaigning, impressing on the world's billionaires to give away large amounts as charity.

*We have a story in AsvamEtha Parva of Mahabharata. A hungry family of four were about to eat some pan cakes made after several days of starvation. A guest appeared at the same moment and sought food. One by one, all the family members gave away their food to satiate the guest's hunger. After testing them, the guest disappeared. The family died out of hunger. A mongoose which accidentally came into contact with the remnants of the powdered barley used for making the cake, got its head turned into gold. There was no barley flour left to convert remaining body of the mongoose into gold. The mongoose went on visiting the sacrifices conducted by kings, to get itself into touch with the sacrificial offerings and get its skin converted into gold. The conversion did not happen. The mongoose visited Yudhishthira's horse sacrificial venue, with a hope that Yudhishthira's sacrifice will match the sacrifice of the hungry family. The mongoose again failed.

English Gist
Knowledge resides in the bodies of knowledgeable persons safely and without flickering. It is like light shining within the glass chimney of a lamp.

ybREMs: The Poet Vemana's verses, their number is undetermined and undeterminable. Brown's collection itself had around 2,500 verses, many of which have deep philosophical meaning and are incomprehensible for illiterates and semi-literates.

There are hundreds of verses in public circulation, which did not appear in Brown's collection. "ATa veladi" being an easy meter to write poetry, later-day enthusiasts might have added many verses, using their own creativity. It is now difficult to distinguish between the original verse of Vemana and the creative work of common folks. We have to attach greater importance to the meaning rather than the originality or subsequent addition of the verse.

#006 VEMANA- WHETHER AN EXTROVERT OR AN INTROVERT?

It is difficult to say whether Vemana was an extrovert or an

introvert.

Vemana, was definitely, an extrovert in his youth and pre-self-realisation stage.

Vemana, stopped socializing in the post-self-realisation stage i.e. the liberated later part of his life.

There is no record of his visiting the Capital of the Reddy Kingdom and meeting kings like Karpura Vasanta Rayalu or Peda Komati Vema Reddy. He must have been aware of the marriage and maternity taxes which were collected by the Reddy Kings and their luxuries, because his elder brother was a feudal lord.

The gems of his wisdom were, apparently, the effervescences from his emotions, recollected in tranquility, when he sat under trees, semi-naked. It is difficult to say whether he was aware of what had been happening, in the village or the kingdom. The rural scenario of India, the Andhra Pradesh, was nearly static intra-village-event-wise and fully gyrating and tumultuous
outside historically. The kingdoms of Deccan of those days were exposed to Islamic invasions and plundering by marauders. The rural societies were locked from inside in terms of production of goods and services, and the caste system. Vemana's observations of the society, may therefore, have many contours of possibilities of stagnation. Traces of these, we can find in some of his 2000+ verses.

WAS VEMANA, A TRULY SELF-REALISED SOUL?

This is a difficult question. Remaining unaffected by what is happening outside (withdrawal) and reflecting the environment at the same time, is a symptom of consciousness.

Realisation has two stages, in my opinion. The first stage is: knowing the truth about oneself, the world, and the relationship between self and the world. The second stage is: implementing the ideas and knowledge in one's own inner life and the relations with the society. For the secluded man, where is the relationship with the society?

#005 HOW to DISTINGUISH PEOPLE?

The poet Vemana wrote nearly 2000 verses. Many of these verses have become obscure. C.P. Brown, a British Official of the 19th Century deserves credit for bringing out nearly 2000 verses and publishing them.

A 's`atakam' means 100 verses. Teachers all over Andhra Pradesh used to teach the Vemana Satakam to primary school children upto 2000 A.D. The A.P. Government text books, schools and Private schools in Andhra Pradesh do not give any importance to Vemana Satakam.

One very popular verse escaped my attention while preparing the post #000 full text Roman Text at this blog. I quote and discuss it here:-

Uppu Kappurambu okka poolika nund`u
Chuud`a chuud`a ruchula jaad`a veeru
Purushulandu pun`ya purushulu veerayaa
Vis`vadaabhi Raama Vinura Veema!

GIST
Salt and camphor look alike. Their tastes differ, when we observe. Virtuous men stand out among men. (Men and virtuous men look alike. But, their characteristics differ. We have to carefully distinguish and discriminate).

MY COMMENTS
The 44 American Presidents belong to the same class of Presidents of America. They have some common traits which enable them to succeed in getting elevated as Presidents. Nevertheless, all the men need not be truly virtuous or equally virtuous. They may be totally divergent. We can see such divergence between Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevilt. We can see the variance between Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan or George Bush. Will Barrack Obama be like salt or camphor? Time will decide this. Besides, there can never be a perfect white #ffffff or black #000000 among humans. Everybody is a shade of gray.

Understanding human mind, hence, is somewhat complex. We can grasp the depth of Vemana's insight.

#002, IMPRESSIVE STORY BEHIND VEMANA'S RENUNCIATION

There is a very impressive story in circulation on how Vemana renounced his worldly life and became an ascetic, sceptic and saintly person.

Vemana was an younger brother of ruler of a small place. He used to respect his elder brother's wife well.

Vemana's early life was pleasure-seeking. He used to live a number of days in the house of a prostitute. He used to give her gold, money, lands and satisfy her in many ways.

One day, when Vemana was in a jolly mode, the prostitute asked him for a gift. She asked him to present the nose-ornament worn by his sister-in-law. It was a small gold piece with a stone embedded in it.

Vemana went to his brother's house and asked his sister-in-law for the nasal ornament revealing for what purpose it was required. His sister-in-law agreed to give it to him on one condition. She would hold the ornament in her hand. She will be bending fully naked. Vemana had to look his sister-in-law from behind, and collect the ornament by sending his hands through her two legs.

He agreed for it. When he saw his sister-in-law's naked body, he saw her anus. He realised that human body was nothing but a storehouse of faecus and urine. His realisation was sudden and permanent.

He abandoned the ornament, prostitute, brother, sister-in-law and became a recluse. Gradually, wisdom donned on him. He used to sit under a tree nearly naked unmindful of what people say about him. During the period he said thousands of verses in Telugu language in meters called Aat`a Veladi and Kandam. They have a reprive called "Vemaa! (Oh Veema! i.e. his name)" or "Visvada abhi raama Vinura Veema! (Oh wise Vema listen!).

THIS WRITER'S ANALYSES OF THE ABOVE STORY:

1. We may or may not believe the above story. We have a choice. Any choice is OK.

2. People can get realisation and renunciation in two ways.

a) Happening of a sudden incident which totally changes the path of a life, such as a new friendship, love, business, job, accident etc.

b) Continuous and gradually enlightenment through reading and analyses.

For a) above to happen we have to wait. There is an uncertainty. For b) above, we have to work hard, face some testing situations. The second method is called "Nitya Anitya Vicaaram (Enquiry of real-unreal, permanent-ephemeral). We should be able to clearly distinguish between the two. We should convince ourselves that what appears "real" to us is not truly "real". Shankara called this "Mithya (illusion)" and Jagan mithya (World is delusion).

But I have a different analytical view. What appears to be "real" is really "real". We are the illusion. We are ephemeral. Transitory. We come and go. Our Bank account is real. It continues even after we did, till somebody else draws from it. "Jagat" in a dictionary means "the world". Ja = what is born. Gat = what dies, goes. The world is not born. It does not die or go anywhere. Hence the world is not the Jagat. We are the Jagat.

I am not writing this in a preaching mode or mood. Many verses of Vemana emphasize this ephemerality of the world. Hence this story and the discussion.

3. We see even stronger things on the Internet and in the films. Yet we do not get any renunciation. Why? The answer is very simple. A person who can eat hay stacks will not be satisfied with a blade of straw.

A person who thus enlightens himself with this knowledge becomes a person of COMPOSURE. Choice and Discretion are important.How a male buffalo is inferior to a bullock? A person should study in depth before arriving at conclusions. Fragility of hearts and minds If a piece of iron is broken, the pieces can be fused by welding in a furnace. When a person becomes aware and intelligent, his mind and senses do not vascillate. His intellect links itself to compassion and God. When darkness sees the Sun, does it remain there? What is deliverance? The mind should be stable.
like a lamp undisturbed by wind;
== sea when tranquil without great waves.
It is unaroused and unperturbed.

Nischala aatma unna Nirvikaarambuna

A person can attain deliverance if he can stay unmoved and unperturbed by the travails of this life. Similes used: 1. Beyond the atmosphere, the sky has vacuum where even air does not exist. 2. Deep seas will be calm.

When a person becomes aware and intelligent, his mind and senses do not vascillate. His intellect links itself to compassion and God. When darkness sees the Sun, does it remain there?

Greed for money not due: That person and his son who covet for legacies of others will be under an illusion. They will never get. Can an unfortunate person get fortunes? Raani dhanamu naku nu Taanu nu kod`uku nu Vaamcha pad`ut`e kaani Vat`t`I bhramalu Bhaagya hiinu naku nu Phalamu labhimcu naa? Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! An unfortunate person who comes into possession of a touchstone (stone which when touched converts cheap metal to gold), cannot hold it on. He loses. An unfortunate person who comes into possession of a touchstone (stone which when touched converts cheap metal to gold), cannot hold it on. He loses.

Ignoramuses exist plenty. Difficult to trace a wise person. Worldlybound persons classify knowledgeable persons as mad. Bound, they cannot shed their nature. Even if a mad person searches for nature, he cannot trace it. Gnaana vamtu cuuci sarikarma baddhulu verri amdru; prakruti vid`uva leeru; verrik avani praruti vedakina kalugu raa Vis`avada abhi raama vinura Veema! Some do not know the distinctions and philosophies of somebody being greater and somebody being ordinary. Infatuated, they kneel and pray. Who is a person to receive prayers? Who is the praying person? takkuv ekkuval anu tatvamulu teliyaka mrokku ceesu komdru moohamu nanu mrokku koned`u vaad`u mrokked`i vaad` evaru raa Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! A pot with a frail bottom is obnoxious. An ascetic without a strong body is abominable. Such recluse is like a head shaven widow. (During the days of Veemana, Brahmin widows used to get their heads tonsured, so that they do not look attractive to men). ad`ugu gat`t`i leeni aa kumd`a adi roota od`alu gat`t`i leeni yoogi roota terava mumd`a moope terag aayen ayyayyoo Vis`vadaabhi raama Vinura Veema! What does a dog know about the God S`iva! What does a fox know about fasting? What does a stupid know about the path of deliverance? kukka eemi erugu guru limga deevuni nakka eemi erugu okka poddu muurkhud` eem erugu mookshampu troova nu Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Ascetics fall a prey to the loving postures of women. They become a subject of infamy. A cat feels comfortable when it gets a bird. satula valapu cuuci yatulu mohimturu looka nimdak ella loonu kaanu pit`t`a dorikin apud`u pilli ki kus`alam au Vis`avada abhi raama Vinura Veema! If he is not His, he can never be He. The one who is present in him is He. The one who saw Him is the really accomplished ascetic. vaani kaani vaad`u vaad`u kaanee kaad`u vaani looni vaad`u vaad`u summu vaani kanna vaad`u vaad`y taa yoogi raa Vis`vada abhi raama vinura Veema Without a Creator this Universe cannot exist. He created this vivid composition. A Universe without a Creator is rare. Vis`va karma leeka vis`vambu leedu raa vis`va karma ceese vividha racana vis`va karma leeni vis`vambu arudu raa Vis`vada abhi raama vinura Veema! Vis`va karma = Creator; vis`va = world; karma = act; leeka = without; vis`vambu, or vis`vamu = Universe; leedu = does not exist; raa = a suffix while calling close friends in informal contexts; ceese = did; vividha = varied; different types of; racana = composition; arudu = rare. The spirit of God is omnipresent in this Universe. Without knowing this, people search for it everywhere. The spirit within one's own self is true in whom? Vis`vam amdu aatma velayut`an erugaka veere umd`un anucu vedukan eela tanadu loona aatma evari amdu nijamu Vis`vada abhi raama vinura Veema! The poet considers the fate of a cunning person who cooks meat for himself secretly and eats. When he is relieved of his flesh, how does he speak? (He does not speak!) maamsamunu tanaku nu maat`u gaa ceesuka maamsamu tinun at`t`i maaya jiivi, mamsamu vid`up aina maat`al eet`i ki aad`u raa Vis`vada abhi raama vinura Veema!. TRUTH .. Truth and Awareness coexist. When truth manifests in a person, awareness and knowledge also manifest in him. Where awareness and knowledge manifest, Truth joins. If both awareness and truth balance one another in a person, he becomes a Brahmin. (Implied: A person by birth is not a Brahmin. He must have awareness and truth flourishing in him.) Vamd`i vaccun apud`u Vamt`akam amrutambu Kamt`ik impu gaanu Kaanu pimcun Od`ala tinina timd`I Vad`i mimca gad`I teeru Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Ethics and foresight needed: People do not shed haste and flamboyance, Do not use foresight, Do now know reviving techniques when fall, They have become formidable by force Instead of by Ethics and righteousness. Village officials: If village head is strong, the village accountant will be strong. And vice versa. The happiness of the village head is the happiness of village Accountant. Perils: Excess jocose with a knave, wife of another person, sinner – are the root causes of death. Benefits from others’ actions: Meditated, knowledgeable, emancipated persons plant a tree of benevolence and deliverance. Can’t one take the fruits of the trees? Manasu nilpin at`t`i Marmagnul agu vaaru Garima mooksha padamu Kanna vaaru Cet`t`u pet`t`a phalamu ceekonad`aa taanu? Vis`vada abhi raama vinura Veema! Self effort: The true experience and philosophy is : understanding oneself. On this earth, nobody else can teach. If a person remains without realising oneself, then nobody else can do it. Dearth of good persons: On this earth, in spite of the best search, there are no good persons. There is dearth of gold, but no shortage of cheap metals. The covetous person must learn to use sweet words; win over the hearts of others by apt talk. Maat`al aad`a neerci Manasu karuga ceesi Paraga priyamu put`t`a Paluka kunnan Okari ceeta sommul uuraka vaccunaa Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Creatures, how born: Some in eggs. Some worms are born in froth. Some in sweat. Amd`amu lanu put`t`un Alaru praan`ulu konni Budbudamulan put`t`u Purugul ella Sveedamunanu put`t`u Jiivulu konni raa! Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Food excesses: Excess food kills people. They suffer when the body abstains from food. That food which does not kill or cause pain, will it not be adequate? Annam adhikam ainan Adi tanu campunu Annam amt`ak unnan Aatma noccu Campan ompa buvva Caaladaa veyyeela Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Deliverance: prerequisites: Unless a person sheds desires and greed, he cannot free himself from bondage. Unless he becomes free, he cannot be a sage. Unless he becomes a sage, the temptations do not cease. Aas`al ud`uga kaani Paas`a muktud`u kaad`u Muktud` aina kaani Muni yu kaad`u Muniyun aina kaani Mohambul ud`ugavu Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Temptations: A king who wants to kill a person, gives him power. An enemy who wants to cause danger, makes friendship first. A snake intending to byte, it will hide itself. Campa talacu raaju Cana paggalamb iccu Cerupan unna pagara Celimi seeyu Karavan unna paamu neri Kaacu koni yumd`u Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! Traitor should always be punished: If there is some foulness in a sugar cane, we cannot eat it until we remove it. How can there be a traitor in the palace? Ceraku loonan aina Ced`d`a gun`amb unna Tiisi veeyak unnan Tinaga posagad Amtipuram droohi Aatad et`l umd`u raa Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema! NAILS AND AXLES OF THIS BODY This body has five joints: two shoulders, two thighs and one neck, total five. We must visit places while these five axles work. Even if one nail drops, the chariot of this body comes to a halt. ciilalu idu umd`aganee caalaga tanuvu aned`u rathamu jagamula tirugun kiilokat`i viid`enamt`ee kraaladu aa rathamu ced`unu kadaraa Veema! Body: NO USE OF FASTING When we fast, the body uses its inner fluids and fats to survive. The poet considers these as body impurities. Hence a fasting person feeds on his own impurities. Thus, a person who abstains from food and consumes impurities, how does he get deliverance? Kuud`u pet`t`akunna praan`amulu bhakshan`amu seeyu kukshi malamu kuud`u viid`i malamu koniyunna muktud`ee? Vis`avadaabhiraama vinura Veema! Every day humans wash their bodies with water and explore all parts. They give it good food. They adorn it with good clothes. On this earth, for the sake of this body, humans what travails do the people undertake? Niil`l`a poosi kad`igi Nityambu s`oodhimci kuud`u pet`t`I miida Kooka katti Eemi paat`lu pad`udur ii deehamu naku ila Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema Disobeying mother, father, elder brother – all these three sins are to be understood. One must behave knowing these. Tallik eduru konut`a Tamd`rik eduru konut`a Annak eduru konut`a Anaga muud`u Paatakamulan erigi Vartimpagaa vale Vis`vada abhi raama Vinura Veema!

Dearth of good persons:
On this earth, in spite of the best search, there are no good persons. There is dearth of gold, but no shortage of cheap metals.

Creatures, how born:

Food excesses:
Excess food kills people. They suffer when the body abstains from food. That food which does not kill or cause pain, will it not be adequate?

Deliverance: prerequisites:
Unless a person sheds desires and greed, he cannot free himself from bondage.
Unless he becomes free, he cannot be a sage.
Unless he becomes a sage, the temptations do not cease.

Temptations:
A king who wants to kill a person, gives him power. An enemy who wants to cause danger, makes friendship first. A snake intending to byte, it will hide itself.

Traitor should always be punished:
If there is some foulness in a sugar cane, we cannot eat it until we remove it. How can there be a traitor in the palace?

NAILS AND AXLES OF THIS BODY
This body has five joints: two shoulders, two thighs and one neck, total five. We must visit places while these five axles work. Even if one nail drops, the chariot of this body comes to a halt.

Body: NO USE OF FASTING
When we fast, the body uses its inner fluids and fats to survive. The poet considers these as body impurities. Hence a fasting person feeds on his own impurities. Thus, a person who abstains from food and consumes impurities, how does he get deliverance?

Every day humans wash their bodies with water and explore all parts. They give it good food. They adorn it with good clothes. On this earth, for the sake of this body, humans what travails do the people undertake?
